This site is dedicated to the life and work of Edwin Hubert Henderson, architect (1885-1939). Henderson was Chief Architect of the Commonwealth of Australia from 1929-1939.
Henderson married Muriel Grace Butcher (1905-1966) in 1933 at Queanbeyan. He was 48 , she was 28.
Muriel Butcher was the daughter of Thomas William Butcher (1875-1950) and Grace Eliza Trevena (1874-1947). She was born in Fiji where her father was a Methodist missionary.
She has 4 siblings:
Both her sisters were born in Fiji. The family moved back to Melbourne where the two sons were born.
Her family remember Muriel as a good looking women who always dressed well. She was softly spoken and charming.
It appears that Muriel moved to Canberra to work in the Federal Public Service in the late 1920s. In 1928 she is recorded on the electoral roll as being a clerk living at Beauchamp House.
EH and Muriel lived at Torres Street, Red Hill in Canberra.
In 1935, they had a daughter, Judith. Sadly, Judith died in 1940, aged 5.
Muriel passed away on 15 April 1966 at Surry Hills in Victoria. Her death certificate records that she died of “coronary occlusion” or heart attack.
She is buried with Judith in Burwood Cemetery.
